Intro – Fall 2013

Haus Rucker-Co, Cover – Haus Lange Krefeld (1971) [1]

Within the common overall theme covering studies in Unit 2+3d will be framed by a focus on the performative and relational qualities of architecture. With the human body as our optic we take on the task of developing architecture embedded in what we recognize as fields of dynamic relationships. Concordantly, two theoretical discourse optics within aesthetics are particularly influential in the construction of studio assignments – the two optics are known by their subject of investigation, atmosphere and affect (please see studio glossary for further information on field; atmosphere and affect theory).
The study method practiced in the unit emphasizes experimental approach, critical thinking and discussion. Of equal importance to all of these, moreover communication.

Methodologically, in the fall semester the unit approach will be known as practice-based research (this research practice is also known as research by or through design). Structured by five consequent phases, the role of covering as a relational element is to be explored, seeking to un-cover its expanded definition through inquiries into spatial, structural and material implications of the analyses and experiments performed. Thus, the scope of the unit´s research is to think and materialize ways in which the act of covering can affect relations – i.e. act as a mediator between a potential inside and outside, and between the material and the immaterial, the static, as well as the ephemeral.
Our unit being construed as a laboratory investigations and experiments will be performed in an on-going dialogue between the individual and collaborative production in groups, as well as the collective unit production. Following an initial individual positioning of students in relation to the particular subject matter of the unit´s research, collectively performed analysis of relevant examples will contribute to the establishment of a unit-specific state of the art archive. Having thus delimitated the field of investigation, we will continue our exploration by testing selected structural and material properties in relation to somatic experience through a series of experiments leading to the production of prototypes.

The outcome of the research performed in the fall semester will be made public in the last week of November, furthermore as a unit endeavour qualify the production of site-specific architectural interventions in the spring semester.
Intensely looking forward to developing our unit in collaboration with you,
Izabela Wieczorek & Tine Nørgaard
